308 X7?

Hi guys. I just came home with a 308 parted up and in boxes. It has a twin intake but a cast, not aluminum, head. The pistons are all marked "X7" and several of them ALSO have "40" stamped into them. Can you tell me, is this an X7 engine? Is it a 1951? Any information would be appreciated. I am going to rebuild the engine and need to know where to start.

Cheers.

Geoff.

  • A True 7x Engine Will Have Half Inch Studs In The Block To Set The Head On And Larger Valves. The Engine Ser Number Should Have Some Letters And Some Numbers. If It Is The Original 51 Engine The Block Number Will Match Vin Number On Pass Door Post. The 40 On The Pistons Indicate It Is 40 Thousands Overbore. But Orig Pistons Were Not Stamped X7 Nor 7x. Also A Split 9dual Exhast Manifold Was Standard On The 7x Engine. Also If The Cam Is Out Check Casting Number An Original 7x Cam As A 311040.
