Poll.... Hollywoods... hardtop or convertible candidate....
Okay, seems it's time for yet another poll....
this one is for fun. Let's just see who has a bucher instinct, and who is a purist at heart. This one is different, you are going to be accountible for your answer. That means if you vote, your ID will show what you voted for. (i really wanted to try this last poll, but shyed away...)
Anyway, have some fun, let's see where you stand....

I happen to like the hardtops. Don't really like the Hud convertibles with the oversized forehead, I think it looks terrible with the top down. Do agree that the '54 hardtops were the best looking.0
-
Hollywoods are just as rare as converibles and surely more rare than coupes. A convertible would have to be worth TONS to make it worth sacrificing a Hollywood, which I hear can be pricey too in good condition. I saw two really nice hollywoods at the orphan car picnic in Aurora about a week ago.
I agree about the '54 Hollywoood being the best looking '54 esp with 2 and 3-tone paint jobs. Maybe Hudson would've sold more cars if they made more hollywoods. It looks definitely like a contemporary of other mid-'50's designs.0 -
where's the "that thought sorta crossed my mind, but when it did, it was using a club coupe:D ." honestly i have seen a good donor coupe (western car - buckled roof from junkyard handling). i havent seen a hollywood not worth saving as a hollywood (if it was savable). saw one that was rolled but it was rusted as bad as the car that would be providing the convertible pieces.0

nick, are you refering to mine? :-) Actually I was wondering how hard it would be to make the coupe a hardtop? (just changing the doors, not the roof)0 -
FWIW, I am Nick S.'s dad and you will have hard time converting him! When he was 12 years old and showed a strong interest in HET, I could have bought him a stepdown convertible to restore, but he insisted on a 1954 Hollywood. 20 years later, he is still proud owner of his project.0

common view from the getgo, but without the header they wouldn't look so great with a visor.
jay - i could see you carson topping a hollywood. now there's a thought with a hollywood that has crossed my mind.

took me a bit to figure out what you meant as my above comments were burried on my desktop (i thought they were already posted). i remember now, your donor car got the cable through the roof treatment... didn't it? NO, thats not it, the car i was referring too was damaged worse, and was a 48 or 49 (so full size) but nice body otherwise.
As for your question, Its a bit different than i was thinking above, but the doors would be workable, quarter windows would be tough, perhaps use parts from "some" two door hardtop to work into a coupe, perhaps hudson convertible(good luck there) as they have to pivot up over the door post to seal with the door windows. i don't say hollywood as i think the roof mods would get tough (without doror roof parts) as that window is considerbly longer than the convertible. though if you got with someone saving a convt with a hollywood you may have something to work with. the door windows should be obtainable or perhaps build own and even go vent windowless like dan. might as well chop it a couple inches giving you the thinner hollywood roofline and the closed car window height, perhaps with a 48-53 lay down the rear window a bit more like the sedan to match the curves.
now your building a rod that'll make the barris brother's proud.
if you are gonna cut a hudson up:eek: , at least do it right. better yet - don't. just restore it and enjoy it for what it was.0 -

The idea seemed like way too much work for my budget, but you never know, I think it would look cool. I think sleds look great w/o the door posts, but not everyone can afford those mods, me included.
If I could get an inexpensive chop done, you know I'd do it! But I like the Hud because you can have a good looking sled without chopping it, but doesn't mean I wouldn't if I could swing it.
As for the '54 Hollywood, I think its much better looking than a convertible. Sorry, I can't get pass that darn forehead. Though I'm not a big fan of fins, the '54 Hollywood is a great looking car I think, though I would have like it to keep the '52 grille, or come up with something a bit different, maybe some lights on the grille insert inside the opening. Of course, I would lower it and get rid of the hood ornament, shave it, etc., etc., but I really like the roof line and the hardtop feature.
I say, if you want to modify it, modify it! There has not been a car built that you can't improve on, even if that just means washing it. :-)0 -

Nice car nick s.
Though I don't think I would ever own a stock Hudson, I have to say these are nice looking cars and have some good lines to them.
But, if it was mine, even in this nice condition, it would get some mods for sure. Having said that, I don't think I would go with a Carson top, too billowy (?) for me. I like the slim roofline of these better. Not sure I would chop this one, its too square for that. I think a chop is much better on more flowing, curved line cars, like the 48 to 53 step downs. Maybe some early 'vette or chevy grille teeth in the grille opening.
Nonetheless, congrats on your car.0 -
I'd have a hard time doing it to a '54, but a 51-53, I'd be looking for a top assy, windshield frame and rear deck pieces. I'll bet there's a good number of hollywoods that are now convertibles, and some you may never know the truth about.0
-
Having finished a 54 Hollywood for my buddy Mac last year, I am partial to the 54. It actually "grew" on me. It does seem to have proper porportions. I always felt that the back window looked like it was upside down on the 51-53's. Maybe the higher rear fenders helped to counter that.?? Make a convertible? Don't put it past me..If I had a rusted out conv to use as a donar car.. sure. I like a challa:rolleyes: nge.0
-
jay, hudsondad my thought were directed towards the 51-53 for sure, personally i haven't seen a modified 54 where i felt that it actually worked. thats not to say some have made the best choices on some earlier bodies. and jay it has does have mods - it has hash manifolds and i just installed pacer motor mounts:) and oh yeah, i have a 6V fm converter inline with the radio.
and to the origional question of the post. if i had a rusted out convert and a hollywood in front of me, Jay, you could come pick up the parts to weld in your roofline. but the convertible would have to be gone body and frame, with a workable body, i would have to opt for the frame reconstruction and/or transplant route and give the hollywood a chance. though an unsuspecting sedan may get the frame stolen out from below it.0 -
Great info guys, too much for me right now, but I like the idea. Maybe someday.0

i I DID A 51 HOLLYWOOD THAT WAS STRIPPED OF ALL THE TOP STAINLESS, ONE DOOR AND THE FRONT CLIP GONE. HAD A CONV WINDSHIELD FRAME, USED ILT WITH THE FRONT TOP BOW THAT CLAMPED ON HEADER USED HALF INCH CONDUIT AND BUILT A CARSON TOP. IT CAME OUT SO GOOD, I PUT IN A 7X ENG AND A B AND M HYDRO, WIRE WHEELS, I THINK IT HAS BETTER LOOKS THAN MY STOCK 51 CONV. SINCE IT WAS ASSEMBLED WITH SPARE GOOD PARTS, IT HAS A 52 HOOD, 52 TRUNKLID AND REAR BUMPER 51 PARK LIGHTS. HAS ORIG 51 HOLLYWOOD ROLLUP WINDOWS. WISH I KNEW HOW TO POST A PICTURE, DONE IN FORD YELLOW NEAR TO CORNISH CREAM. AHOLLYWOOD WOULD TAKE MUCH LESS WORK THAN DOING A COUPE. I CUT A COUPE DOOR DOWN AND MADE IT A CONV/HOLLYWOOD DOOR. LEFT OFF SIDE STANLESS AND PORK CHOPS AND FRONT FENDER ROCKETS. LOVE IT BILL ALBRIGHT0

Were you surprised by mine? I'm not personally crazy about the '54 models, but I have really grown to like the '54 Hollywood. I would take a stock '54 Hollywood over any other stock Hudson in any year. Of course, I'd rather do some mods to it, but as a stocker, its hands down my favorite! Call me crazy, but there ya have it! Anybody want to trade? :-)0 -

And jay, my Hollywood needs some improvement, stop by and wash it for me.0 -

I think someone needs to take Jay for a drive in a 308 powered hudson, maybe something with twin h or even a edmunds 2x2, or clifford intake. I bet he could be swayyed to rethink the whole engine swap thing.

And just exactly what kind of mileage you gonna get with that hot 308? Remember, mileage is an important item for me. And there was a 262 rebuilt here that cost the guy $3,000, more than I paid for both my engine and tranny. And he still has problems with it. I loved my ol '42 Ford pickup...ran a '63 vette 327 with camelbacks. Ran like a raped ape, but only got 8mpg! If I didn't want to drive everyday and feed my family, I would consider it.
Not that I wouldn't take a ride now! :-)

I think you would like it a lot.
Hudsons are torque monsters....
and as far as gas mileage, I think that a proper running hudson 6, should get around 20 MPG, am I right?
But one thing for sure, the air conditioning thing still got me thinking....0 -

Yeah, that a/c thing is a must around here! Never heard of a flathead getting 20mpg! Must have been coasting downhill! lol0 -
Hey nick s, do you have pic of the dash in your '54? Are they removable? Are they just like the 52's?0

same as the 52? only in that they're in between the steering wheel and the windshield. i will get you a good pic, yes its removable not sure if the vertical panel would bolt up to a 52 top panel. the top panels are definitely different at the windshield (also speaker but that's nothing to worry about) i just happened to see one on ebay the other day.

Just curious because I don't like the '52 and up style. Don't know if the '51 is like my '50 or the '52.0 -

51 is like 52 and 53 and has the same basic cluster except the wiper and light controls are between the guages. the 48-53 use the same basic guages but year to year amd model to model there are several variations. 55 used the 54 cluster.0 -

Question: For those of you hot rodding a 308, do you all switch to a floor shifter? I always had a rough time trying to speed shift a 3-on-tree. Or do most of you switch to an automatic tranny?0 -

hey PAUL i figure the black one is out, So are we cuttin the blue one or the red one? i can't believe with all the hollywood bashing that's been going on around here:( , the hashes don't even get enough respect to be picked on. oh forget the sawsall i know where i can borrow a plasma cutter:D0 -

My hudson has 4:10 gears, and from what I observe, you can pretty much shift it without using the clutch...
Watching someone drive a stick hudson aggressively, is funny... especially the 1-2 shift. Seems the preferred method is to shove the shifter with the lower palm forward....
just takes a little feel....0
