Hudson ?????
I know where most of the Hudson meets are around the USA and other parts of the world because of the internet and the WTN and a few other places. But do other none Hudson folks know about these meets thru anyother type of communication other then other Hudson folks ? Just thinking about how to involve people in our little part of the Hudson world. Maybe a little more advertisment in some small papers like the pennysaver paper, local news papers Etc. Just thinking about more folks getting interested in our Hudson auotmobiles..Ron

Good question. Hemmings has an area for listing shows. Maybe the Antique Auto Club publication has listing aswell. Speaking of publicity Ron, did you ever get out to see the movie "Cars"?0 -

I think the only way those meets would work is if someone already knew something about Hudsons.
I think the better approach would be to get members off their butts and show up at a few cruise nights so there is more exposure to the public. And show some interest here in the people that come up to talk with you. Around here there are stock originals cars that show up there. Then people can stop and talk to members who in turn could invite them to an all Hudson gathering.
Do the majority of members only tend to hang out with other members? I don't think advertising is going to bring in more than a small few, but I think a cruise night gets you more bang for the buck, its only gas and some liquid to drink on hand. And a friendly smile.
Granted, I can only go by what I see around the Phoenix Valley here. But I can tell you that nobody is worrying about new members here, you never see them around! Hell, a year ago, I couldn't have told you what a Hudson is unless I looked it up on the internet. I have only seen two Hudsons here at a cruise night (one I've seen twice, the other once) and neither owner asked if I had joined the local club. In 30 minutes of talking (at this one cruise), neither the owner nor any of his 4 other friends and spouses ever asked me about coming to a local Hudson gathering or joining the local club and yet they even knew I owned a Hudson! I had to ask one guy if they had a local club around here! But again, they knew I was building a modified and just maybe they figured I wasn't good enough to join them or I was 30 years too young, I don't know. Only one bothered to offer to show me his car (and I was very interested in both theirs cars, even though they were stock), the other keep looking off to the sides while I was trying to talk with him about his Hornet, like I was bothering him! ****, he acted like I was interrupting his picnic.
And yet, whenever a new person appears here on the boards, I see you guys always suggesting they join the HET club. But it doesn't seem to be the case around here at the local level.
Now maybe you guys understand why some of us feel like outsiders and why we don't want to rely on members getting us out of a jam on the highway, at least not around here.0 -
Jay,
you meet those guys with all brands of cars. We have Hud guys up here that have over 10 cars collect everything Hudson but don't want to talk to you about it and basically couldn't give a crap that you are breathing. I had the same experience you did saw a guy with a sweet mint Hudson Hornet and ran over like a panting dog asking questions and running around the car. Guy basically took it for 2 mins and politely told me to f**k off. I put him down in my f**k-you column and moved on.
Had guy with a nice 49 Ford coupe see me in my Hornet he comes over tells me he loves those cars wants to know more about them I talked to him for a couple of hours I went over his 49 he went over my Hornet. Great guy.
In our group of Hudnuts that get together and hang and talk Hudsons we are fanatics and will talk to anyone and everyone. About 45% will drive our cars anywhere and everywhere at anytime. Other 55% bring the cars out when they have calculated the 24 hr weather patterns precisely. Nothing you can do about that. And of the 100% only 10% will actively try and recruite new members. The rest love Huds some will talk your ear off some won't but they just like driving their cars nothing more nothing less.
Best revenge is to get out there when you get your car done and drive the wheels off it. If someone comes up and talks sh*t about the mods tell them to f**k off and have a nice day. Or run them over or both basically its a either or option.:D0 -
It's true some owners cut and run at the sight of rain or even a cloud but that's true of many old car owners. I never understood it myself since most guys at a crusie night have so many layers of wax on their car hat water bounces off.
For a small percentage they only care about Hudsons and only wanna be at shows with other Hudsons. One auto writer for a value guide stated "Hudson owners are a different breed and many aren't interested in other makes." This probalem for that catagory of owners could be cleared up by other Hudsons being at cruise nights.
Many chapters members are not geographically close enough to go to cruise nights together. Some chapters everyone lives in the boonies and has to get off work and drive a few hours to attend a cruise night for a few hours. Chicago-Milwaukee members are scattered all over and I can only think of 2-3 people that would be considered remotely close enough to attend the same cruise in the same town esp. considering that cruises start at 6 pm usually in the smack middle of Chicago rush hour makes with traffic that makes anyone with a nice car nervous. Gotta plan to attend ahead of time.
Me...my cars aren't currently running but I'm not afraid to drive mine anywhere anytime, in any weather when it is running even with vacum wipers and a 6V system. I always take a stack of old newsletters and hand them out to potential members who like the car, I show them any of my cars anytime and if they own one I'd help another Hudson guy anywhere anytime. Every member should attend their local cruise nights but if they did, being 3500 people scattered around the countinental US at any given town you might still only see one Hudson at each cruise. with the exception of perhaps the PA chapter.0 -
Didn't mean to single out Hudson owners, its just that we were discussing them.
Last Saturday night my son and I went to our infamous Pavilions cruise night (one of 2 largest in the valley). I spoke with a gentleman there with a 50's era Checker Limosine (sp?) all original, it was a neat looking car. This guy must have been 75-80 years old but he was happy to tell me about the car, even let my boy sit in the back. I also met a guy with a cherry stock '57 Ford who was very nice. showing us his car. I talked with a retired gent with a modified '50 Olds Coupe that was just righteous! So even the elderly folks driving other brands seem to make it out and are willing to talk with you.
I think around here, the attitude of current members will have to change before you get many more members. I think here you have to hunt them down at gunpoint and ask to join! lol0 -
It's a great point made that there are only 3,500 or so members nationwide. That's not many to go around an attend cruise nights even at 100% participation. I can only go from my experience with the So Cal Chapter, but they (we) attended a multimake meet earlier this year and the club even paid for the entry fee. We had fourteen or so cars I think. Jon Cronk who was the President was solicting members like a carnival barker. We got one or two new members and I got to insult some Mercury owners, it was good fun
I think our chapter should do many more of these type car shows and now that I think about it, I'm going to push for it. It is just plain silly for us not to get a couple cars together and make a showing.
I often attend our local cruise nights with my brother who drives my other Hudson so we atleast wave the flag.0 -
My experience, here in New England, is (and it's gotten worse over the years) you AIN'T gonna get HET people to bring their cars out to a general car meet - such as cruise nights and brand x meets. And a lot of New England people really go nuts if there's a small admission charge.
Now, that said, I have seen, in 30 years, at least 2 Hudsons at brand-x meets I've attended that were street rods - and one or two that were stock. Not a good representation.
I mentioned at one of our chapter meets about hosting a meet here in Southern Maine at a local car musuem. Lordy, you'd thought I'd advocated rape, pillage and plunder. One person even told me flat out he wouldn't come to southern Maine in the summer time because of the traffic.
So how do you change the attitude - if anybody's got a viable answer I'd sure like to know. I've been beating my head against this wall for over 30 years. I even went so far as to post somewhere that I'd gladly accept a donation of somebody's car and take it to any meet I could find - I didn't get any takers.
To qualify here - I am the editor of the New England Chapter newsletter - recently I got an email from a member listing the names of some of our New Englanders who attended an AMC meet - apparently no one took their Hudson, tho a couple were listed with AMC cars. Why no Hudsons?? So it's an AMC meet - we're all in the same canoe.
That's my soap box - hey, it's my birthday and I can say what I want. We'll have no regrets in the morning.

Happy Birthday Alex. C'mon down and borrow Miss Daisy for your next meet.. You buy the gas! LOL

Alex, I think you nailed it it on the head. There is a big problem with members that don't display thier cars. It is a problem because there aren't many Hudsons around to show in the first place. Multi-make meets are the only way to increase awareness in the marque. Orphan / Hudson meets are catering to a very small minority of enthusiest. It makes me proud of the marque with all the attention the Hudsons get at a multi-make meet. Our cars show brand-x owners how special they are. Too bad more HET members don't get it.0
