Is fitting a later 6 cyl engine, late 30's or 46/47 into a 28 Essex a straight forward matter?

Not really. Everything is pretty much different - clutch and brake pedals, engine mounts, drive shaft, transmission, exhaust and intake manifold, water pump (makes engine much longer - won't easily fit behind radiator). It could be done, but not without much modification of the basic layout. Engine would have to be mounted rearward, and hole cut in bulkhead to accommodate this. YOu would have to change the whole thing over as a complete unit, and then the rear end would have to be geared up as well, as the 5.6 ratio would tear the whole thing apart. But you sure would have some climbing power if you left it in there!
