was checking out my new rebuilt motor today, running very well but decided to mount tranny and overdrive to make sure all was working properly befor installing. when the overdrive solenoid was installed and fired it didnt engage far enough to operate the second set of points. meaning it didnt extend far enough into the inside of overdrive unit. solenoid works fine by itself out of unit.. any ideas would be appreciated before i remove the complete overdrive unit for futher inspection thanks steve

    Hi...

Thought a manual might help... this is Studebaker... but identical in operation to a Hudson and interchanges at the parts level.

    Good Luck

I assume you are testing on jack stands or just applying voltage to the solenoid while the vehicle is stationionary? The output shaft may have to be rotated by the drivesaft to line up the notch with the solenoid pawl. I bet it works when driving. Good luck with your New rebuild.

ken first of all thanks for the manual info i have looked through most of it and it appears that maybe i am not installing solenoid properly as it mentions to turn the solenoid 1/4 turn and then install it with proper cap screws will have to try this when i get back to shop on tuesday.... thanks dave also for your input regaarding having to turn the shaft for alignment purposes. what i have is motor in running condition with trans and overdrive all hooked up for testing in a home made stand . i am trying to simulate the overdrive and all was good except the solenoid not engaging as far as it should. thanks for all the help fellows steve

It does indeed sound like you didn't have the solenoid aligned right when you put it in, so the plunger didn't engage as it's supposed to. To confirm that, take the bolts out and without rotating the solenoid, try to pull it out. If it comes out, it was installed wrong. Follow book directions carefully ... rotate the solenoid so the mount plate is about 30-45 degrees from normal alignment, and install it with gentle enough pressure that you'd feel resistance to its going all the way in. Then rotate it to proper position and pull out on it. If it doesn't come out, you've got it correct. Put the bolts back in and you're in business!

Bet that is what it is. When I first got my 55 F-100 running with the overdrive, I went through the same thing. Need to make sure you get it engaged properly when installing
