Hot August Nights Brings Out Great Cars in Reno and Sparks

Once again, it's time for Hot August Nights, the biggest event of the summer in Reno and Sparks. If you love sizzling cars, music, and summer nights, then this is the event for you! This year 5,000 cars are registered, and they'll be cruising the streets of Reno and Sparks from July 31 through August 8.

If you've never been to Hot August Nights, you're in for a real treat. The event celebrates the music and cars of the 50s and 60s. You'll see plenty of vintage rods, cool chicks, and groovy guys, and hear some great music.

Hot August Nights: The Music

Some of the bands entertaining this year include Three Dog Night, Mary Wilson, Dion, The Platters, Johnny Rivers, the Village People, BJ Thomas, Herman's Hermits, Heart, Rare Earth, Englebert Humperdink, The Beach Boys, and Rod Stewart. Some really great performers will be here, and the best news is, many of the concerts are free!

Hot August Nights: The Cars

Then of course there are the cars. Hot August Nights is really a celebration of great cars from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. They take to the streets every night, and there are special controlled cruise nights on Aug. 4 through 7 in downtown Reno and downtown Sparks. On August 6 and 7, the big rig trucks will cruise downtown Reno. All controlled cruises run from 7pm to 10pm. Be warned, the controlled cruises are very crowded, sometimes its hard to get a good view of the cars because there are so many people.

Hot August Nights: Is There Anything Else?

You bet! One of our favorite things to do during Hot August Nights is to go out to dinner somewhere along Virginia Street, and then sit and watch the cars afterward. Many more people are doing this, and the cars and drivers really appreciate the audience.

There's also X-Karts racing at Desert Raceway Park of Reno, and the brand new Stars and Stripes Truckerfest featuring 18-wheel new and classic trucks at the Alamo Petro Stopping Center in Sparks. The best place to find out what's happening every day is the Hot August Nights web site (you can click on it at the above right). They have a comprehensive listing of events at each venue around town.

Don't forget the swap meet and auction! Every year, these parts of Hot August Nights get more popular. The Swap Meet runs August 5, 6, and 7 at the Livestock Events Center on Wells, just past 9th Street, from 7:00am to 6:00pm each day. You can find everything from vintage car parts to vintage clothing. It's great! Also, the Silver Car Auction is a wonderful place to find that vintage car of your dreams. This year's auction takes place August 5 through 8, and you can find out more at the link on the right.

Hot August Nights is one of the best events in Reno -- the locals love it just as much as the visitors. So, come enjoy Hot August Nights, if you can get a hotel room, they go really fast (like the cars)!

  • room rates (2005) haven't been determined as yet for August at one motel that I called, but last year they were averaging ~ $200/night; WOW! I hope my stock picks do well next year!!
