measuring RESISTANCE on '54 gas tank sending unit

SUBJ: Bench-testing the '54 Hornet/Wasp's gas tank sending unit w/Ohm meter

1. I've read several articles on this subject, but I was wondering if anyone knows the correct measured resistance (Ohms) when the float is in the "FULL position"?

2. Also, what about when it is in the "HALF full" position?

3. And, finally, when its in the "EMPTY position?

THANKS,

Based on measurements made on two units today, the resistance is 10 at the full position, 70 at the other end of travel. With the arm at the midpoint of its travel, the resistance was 30. Typical problems with these critters are dirty resistance windings, preventing good contact by the "wiper" contact; a broken brass strap that grounds the wiper contact; or a poor connection where that brass strap is riveted to the gauge housing. The latter can usually be corrected by using a punch and light hammer to squish the rivet a little more and break through the corrosion.
