from an other list i belong to. maybe already known on this list but here it is ...

quote:I want to pass on my comment about wiring harnesses. The wiring in my ‘49 Ambassador was in terrible condition. After checking around, I found that Harnesses Unlimited (Box 435, Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087, Phone: 610-688-3998) had information on and would make up a complete harness for the car. I ordered it, and have found it to be excellent. All sections are separately packaged and all wires are color coded and numbered. Correct ends are soldered in most places, and a supply of sleeves and ends are provided where purchaser must attach them. The directions are very specific and in one instance where I found a discrepancy between their directions and the schematic in the Service Manual (dimmer switch connections), they were correct and the schematic was mislabeled. Tech support has been very good, and in a couple of instances where I needed additional connectors and sleeves (my error, not theirs), they sent additional ones at no charge.

They aren’t cheap ($720 for my car), and don’t have harnesses for all cars or models. However even if they don’t have it for your particular car, if you are doing a total restoration and remove the old harness intact and send it to them, they’ll study it, cross check it with a schematic (which they seem to have for about everything), and make a harness for you. (From that point on the harness for your car will be available in their catalog.) They are very “low tech” in one respect. They have no website or internet address. All communication is by letter or phone (generally an answering machine and they’ll get back to you). You can call or write to them and they’ll send a catalog to you (quite extensive). They also sell supplies as well as completed harnesses.

I know that in my case it has been money well spent. I think it’s a good idea to pass on information about a service or supplier with whom one has had an excellent experience.

How do they compare with price and quality with XYZ, and Rhode Island wiring ? Wiring up a complete Hudson is BIG bucks now,and price matters !

If we're comparing apples to apples, then here's the pricing for Rhode Island wiring {current several years ago} A 1950 Nash Statesman which I found to be the closest to the 49 Ambassador ran $250 for the dash and $185 for the body harness. Allowing for the fact that this catalogue was a few years old ,it still saves you by going to Rhode Island. Don't have anything on YnZ in California.

I hear on the news that the value of copper is up 3 times higher from what it was this time last year and plain old regular automotive wiring has doubled in price. Might not be cheap now to even do it yourself.
