Not sure if there's something I'm missing, but there's a '54 sedan that looks very nice, that is mis-listed under "parts and accessories", with minimum bid of $1,000 (down from earlier $8,000). Only a day left. Is anybody watching?

Looks like a scam? Previously advertised car at greatly reduced price. No prior sales of ratings on seller. Caveat emptor. Walt-LA

Point well taken. But I think this is on the "up and up", because the lady previously listed it with only 2 photos, and I did a "question to seller" wherein I advised her to do some more photos. She added 3 more, and thanked me profusely for my input. Still not enough to adequately represent the car, but I chalked it up to her inexperience (no feedbacks) and her obvious lack of specific knowledge about the car. The fact that she could add photos after my suggestion means she has the car available for her to photograph, and its not the old "lift someone else's pics and sell the vapor" scam. If no one else bids, I may have to, and take a short road trip from Washington to South Carolina, which I understand can be beautiful this time of year. The Mrs. is always clamoring for a road trip, anyhow.
  • I do not know the lady... but recieved pictures via email and later corresponded with her concerning the non original interior. I let her know what to look for and recieved an email thank you back. I was away over the weekend and when I returned had a email offer to sell the car for twice the ebay bid. Not sure what is going on here ... also there is an ad from an ebay seller offering a ... first hand evaluation of the same car for 60 dollars. WHile the car looks very good in the pictures I am suspicious of the opportunity.
  • I am new to this forum, so please excuse my inability to get get links set up, etc. That said, I AM THE E-BAYER selling the report, item 300035385763! The car is not a piece of junk, nor is it as good as her photos indicate. It is probably not worth her original $9000 asking price. The very thorough report I am selling will definately help you guys place a bid. I wanted the car, but momma said "NO!", so I am just trying to recover my $350 investment. I can e-mail the report and photos at the speed of electrons to anybody with an e-mail address and 60 bucks! Believe me, the photos are worth that. Thaks guys!

    Hello Don,

What I would do is send an email message to the buyer of that car--offering the inspection material to that person for the price you mention. Unless the buyer is a real Hudson expert or, a highly qualified mechanic, or someone who is just looking to flip the car at a higher price without doing much to it--This should be extremely valuable information to that buyer. I bought a car on EBAY and I certainly would have paid an additional $60 (or more) for a detailed report of what I was getting.

Just my thoughts--and hope you are still following this thread. Come to think of it--I will send this to you via the ebay email system.

    JP
  • Believe it or not, the buyer bought the report before the auction ended. I guess great minds think alike! Thanks for the suggestion though. I would not have thought of it myself!

Hi, I am the member that bought both the car and the report. I plan to take my car hauler to columbia as soon as I can figure out how the good lady wants payment. From the report I think 7K is a fair price.local friend can tighten up any old Hydramatic leak if still in otherwise good shape and I can fix any paint issues-One advantage to being over 65 in NC is free Community College and Gold's Gym. If you think a frame off down to the metal paint job is easy -it aint you should see what is left of my present project. I also own Park's 51 C8

I'd give them another chance to honor the sale and if they won't report them as a Non Performing Seller - Ignorance is no excuse! Just ask any cop who writes you a ticket!

Here's the link to this in the ebay help system and if you expand some of the items on the page you will learn your rights to the sale and what Ebay can do to this seller.

    Good luck!

  • I just read the link from Rambos Ride. One of the options that e-bay mentions is referal to the authorities. This has GOT to be some kind of fraud. If you can't get satisfaction, urge e-bay to honor their stated buyer protection polocies. I am sure lots of e-bayers would want to know what they are goig to do about it.

I STRONGLY AGREE WITH DON M. (APOLOGIES TO PAULLARGETYPE). Fraud/non-compliance on EBAY is an extremely serious issue. Many members here have purchased cars on Ebay (me included) and probably would do so in the future ---IF--BUT ONLY IF-- EBAY gets its act together and brings some real effective heat down on sales problems of this type (that is--sales problems that involve some serious money transfer). EBAY, on their website relates over and over that a transaction is a CONTRACT.

I don't know exactly what is up in this particular situation, but it seems to me that a "deal is a deal." If someone agrees to sell something now, and someone else offers more money later, or "explains" that the seller could have done better--well-- a deal should be a deal. Not only that, but EBAY states (claims) that this is a legally enforceable transaction.

There is plenty of RISK FOR THE BUYER of a sight unseen (and SELLER UNSEEN) buyer of a classic car--even if everyone invoved is fair and honest. We all somehow think of a distant car as needing far less than we find out it needs after delivery (In our minds, unseen cars are always in "showroom condition, and need no mechanicall work" other than what is specifically listed in the ad) . Without trust, honesty, fairness, and reliability among both sellers and buyers EBAY would be nowhere.

People on this forum have complained about EBAY before from many angles--"snipers," for example. But, you know, that is the way the system works--highest bidder at the end gets (now hopefully gets) the item.

But, backing out of a deal, without some serious problem caused by a seller--is unacceptable.

This is a Grim situation--that EBAY should resolve. Otherwise they should get out of the auto business.

I agree, Dave- she has no feedback- probably doesn't know how its supposed to work, and doesn't care- What's eBay going to do, take away her birthday? Buyer would have a legal action for breach of contract against her, in South Carolina, but trying to get a court to enforce an eBay contract is going to be iffy, at best. Probably best to chalk it up to experience, and if she lists again, everyone bombard her with "questions to seller" like, "Why don't you take your shoddy business practices elsewhere?"

Guys, I have filed a complaint with ebay and tried to reason with the lady to convince her that a "3" car that don went to great expense to professionally inspect was worth what I bid and was rewarded as winner by ebay ?? I also know what a pain in the rear a leaking Hydromatic and cheap paint job can be. I would really like for hetr to just sell me at the bid and learn her lesson.

Just to bring this full circle... as I previously stated... I received an email stating ... I will sell this car for $XX,XXX dollars. The price was the same was stated via email to the high bidder after the auction closed.

eBay has it's quirks... but it is a business, and while the discussion is jumping around, eBay's business activities in YOUR STATE and HER STATE are regulated by the State Laws. Since this auction is on the INTERNET it qualifies as an INTERSTATE commerce activity. An injured party might want to contact the authorities in these states and at the Fed level and register their complaints. Letting eBay know will at best eliminate the sellers current identity ... only to have the opportunity to plug in another name and credit card and start again.

Hope this has a happy ending... but I broke my rose colored glasses several years back.

I corresponded with her just this afternoon. I had already told her about the bogus second chance offer I had gotten. She replied to my email to let me know she couldn't sell it for that. I honestly think she doesn't have a clue what's going on.This afternoon, I told her that I thought she had gotten a fair price for the car considering it's condition.. Not telling her I knew she was defaulting on the sale. Maybe cooler heads will prevail. :)
  • Forget ebay! They side with sellers, ad nauseum.

File a complaint with your States Attorney's Office as well as the one in her state. Ken Cates is right-on regarding the Internet and interstate commerce. I believe that the FTC regulates E commerce, so why not file such a complaint with them too? If indeed there is a contract which the seller has breeched, she's liable. Ignorance of the laws does not excuse such conduct.
  • This is very unfortunate, because of the significance of the item and $$$ involved, and dealing with an obvoiusly inexperienced seller. My WORST experience on ebay was from a "hudson member" that frequently sells "flawless chrome" and never completed the auction.

    Hudsondad,

You and Hudsonkid both know that I've been there, done that. We should get into the "flawless chrome" business. Maybe then we too can have a big $ 29 Hudson roadster to sell on ebay.

    Guys ( & Gals),

I don't know what to believe anymore. I have received 2 second chance offers via email. Neither of them has been from the seller herself. One of them actually used the ebay messaging system as well! BUT, and this is a big but... it wasn't from the 'official' second chance ebay.

The 1st email was sent by catherineh@girimis.com. I reported that one.

Earnesto2143 sent the 2nd one requesting I respond to abagiu56@gmail.com. I'm in the process of reporting this one.

Be very careful if you receive any emails from these people. I think we may need to go back to trading our cars through the WTN or the local chapter newsletters. What a joke.
