re-wiring
im going to rewire my 46 commadore from the firewall forward and cannot seem to find the wire sizes listed in the hudson procedure manual. should i just use number 12 thru out except for the batt / hot wire feeding the dash ? or is that too big ? i do see all the different colors and colored with diff. tracer colors but no sizes. anyone have an opinion ? off list answers are fine. thanks in advance.

I rewired my 1948 Commodore but I had a wiring diagram in the repair manual to go by. I'm sure that some of the wiring for your car should call for smaller gauge than just 12. Try to get a wiring diagram before you start. The number in front of the color is the wire size.0

my 42-46 book only gives colors and of course there is a "fuse data" chart. this is on the wiring diagram which is very complete except for wire size.0

12, Ign sw feed, gen to reg A term, horn and light sw feed, dimmer sw and headlamp feed
14, ign sw to coil, coil to dist. ,horn button wire, tail, liscence feeds etc
16, signal wires, quarter, courtesy lamps etc.

This site has a table which tells you the maximum current each wire size can carry and a calculator to calculate the voltage lost in the wire for given current (Voltage Drop). This will help you select the correct wire size.
