My 37’s steering gearbox says to use SAE 160 EP IN SUMMER & 90 in winter. Not planning to drive in Montana Winters so what are people using as a modern replacement gear oil for steering box?

Use John Deere 'Corn Head grease" Great stuff. Learned this tip from some hot rodders. Need to get it through agricultural John Deere dealers. Works great. Believe it or not its green in color.0

I read about some guys using it to stop leaking steering boxes but if I had a leak I’d be inclined to fix the leak & use the right stuff. It’s interesting stuff & I appreciate the idea but can’t take chances on my car’s steering box.0

The modern equivalent of EP90 is EP80W/90, like engine oils gear oils have gone multi viscosity. Usually sold in GL4 (low moly d, OK with brass) and GL5 (high moly d, no good for brass) varieties. Alternatively there are semi fluid greases such as this which are marketed as a steering box lube.

Straight greases are of course a no-no in steering boxes.

I've been successfully using the Penrite Semi-fluid grease in the steering box of my 28 Essex for 10+ years. No leaks & no apparent wear so far.0

I use the Penrite stuff too, seems good and less inclined to leak out.0

.... and me for Penrite. I use this brand in all applications. Great stuff.0

Here's another gear oil to consider: https://penngrade1.com/products/gear-lubricants/penngrade-1-classic-gl-4-gear-oil-sae-80w-90/0

Castrol Classic EP90 is GL4 and works for me.0

I’ve heard good things about Penrite products from others as well. I had some safe for bronze brass & copper 75W140 gear oil so I put that in for now. Thanks for all the great suggestions.0

I used 600W transmission oil (as used in Model T Fords) in my 1937 steering box. Figured it was so heavy it would never leak out. And it's supposed to be safe for "yellow metals". So far, so good...
