47 super six dash removal

I am trying to get the speedometer out of my modified 47.  With the tilt wheel column in the way I am wondering if it's not easier to pull the radio plate and access it through that opening instead of from the bottom.  Anyone have experience with this?  I thank you for any help you can give me.
