Re: Brakes on 28 Hudson

Dear Bob,

If you were going to start
the Race somewhere near NYC, I'd be glad to help you out again.

Now I might suggest you try to get some of those bronze
adjusters machined a.s.a.p., and get a bunch of 'em made. 'cause they would sell
well to other Hudnuts. But there's also an adjustment cam on the inside of each
backing plate which sets the shoes. Look for a large nut, about 3/4 inch, which
tightens around a rectangular nut on the outside. Loosen the large nut to adjust
the smaller one - which is probably about 7/16 if I recall correctly.

Now the only REAL method of getting all the brakes adjusted
properly is too have the car off the ground. I believe someone might send you
photocopies of the adjustment procedure form their "26 Service manual WITH
updates about adjusting the brakes.

Adjusting the backing-plate cams sets the shoes closer to the
drums, and then the bronze nuts make the fine adjustment for play caused by
wear, and to help keep it stopping straight.

Remember: it is IMPERATIVE that you never allow the brake arms
(against which those bronze nuts tighten) to pass the 90 degree position when
the brakes are fully depressed.

I think that after two Great Races you probably need to think
about re-lining the shoes. I recall making huge adjustments to those brakes when
you were in Tacoma. You'll need a soft material to stop the car
properly.

You might also look at the front brake accentuators. The
bronze sleeves into which the arms fit take a lot of wear because of the
steering, plus the bushing into which the arm fits on the chassis also wears the
steel arm down and causes more loss of brake pressure.

All in all the 28's really have lousy brakes compared to a
'29; but when you put that '29 Briggs body next to a '28 Biddle & Smart,
well, in my opinion there's no contest, which is why I spent tens years trying
to find the parts for my '28. "course, now I'm broke and can't finish
it.

Bob

Subject: Brakes on 28 Hudson

Dear Hudson experts,

I'm going to run the Great Race
again this year in the 28 Super Six Roadster. My navigator and co-mechanic
is David Hewitt from Granbury, Texas(Headquarters of the Great Race).
We need some help. A) The brakes are pulling to one side, B) There is not
much pedal left, and C) the bronze adjusting nut is worn
out.

Robert C. was kind enough to
adjust the brakes at the start of the 98 Race in Tacoma, but I
have forgot most of what he told me.

Is there a source for the
Adjusting Nuts ? How do you start to adjust the Brakes ?

What could cause pulling to one side ?
Thanks, Bob H.
