Generator 6 Volts vs 12 Volts, etc.

Thanks for the abundance of response that I got from my inquiry about

rewinding my generator. Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough:

I "think" that my generator does not generate now. "How?", you might

ask, "do you know that?"...Let me tell you what I did:

First I recently bought the car and it had been converted to 12 volt

operation before I bought it. I would assume the starter is running

without modification and I know the lights have been changed over.

Any dashboard instruments that require a voltage supply seem to have

been connected through a voltage-dropping circuit and that seems to

work, too. The battery is 12 volts and everything is hunky dorey but

the generator does not seem to charge the battery.

I checked the voltage on the "inside" of the cut-out relay and found

zilch...nada....zero even when the engine was turning over at fairly

high RPM (for that engine, "high" = around 2,000). Without removing

the generator, this leads me to believe that the generator is

not "ginning". Now, armed with that knowledge, I decided to see if I

could get the generator rewound to be able to charge the battery and

posted.

I suppose I could replace the battery and probably the brushes in the

generator but that would require some re-doing of lamps, etc. so, it

seems to me that I might as well throw some money at the problem and

get the generator modified to output somewhere around 13 or 14 volts

to charge my battery.

Sorry for the verbosity but I just wanted to make everything

completely clear and I DO thank everyone for their tips and ideas. I

do not have much experience working on Hudsons but I kind of

understand electricity, being a lifelong Electic one.

Anyhow, I still would like to see if it is possible to get someone

who knows about these things to rewind the sucker and to score a

couple of those crank hole covers.....already nickel plated, of

course.

Thanks again folks.
