Without delving into areas in which I have no expertise, my response on the

issue of a solid internal cable is an emphatic "almost certainly", but with a

truckload of caveats attached. By this I mean that maybe there's a propoer

definition of a bowden cable, but I've had both styles on various cars over the

years.



The notion of an OD sounds good to me. My '28 HS6 Special has a 5-speed Toyota

Celica gearbox that's great for the highways but with synchromesh you lose any

feeling of vintage motoring. I have several friends who have installed, or

soon will, a US-sourced OD for their Silver Ghost or Phantom 1 Rolls-Royces. I

think it'll take a very long time before they cut out the expense in lower fuel

costs, but the big plus is an easier life for the engine on long touring events.

Now I know what a bowden cable is. I always called them "those

flexible cable things that control stuff". The Law of Parsimony was

working against me all those years. Can bowden cables be solid or

must they be stranded? I could not resist the temptation to

introduce the name of the famous Mr. Bowdler into the conversation.

Bowden cable is much more appropriate and I shall use that word with

relish for the rest of my days instead of my American bowderlization

of the language. Thanks, you are a pal.
