Reading the back page, I note that Don Butler was born in 1911, so if he

is still alive, he would be 89 now. My copy was printed in 1982, so he

would have been 71 then, so don't hold your breath waiting for a new

edition!!! I think there may be minor errors, particularly in the

designation of captions and photographs, but it appears that his

research and access to official documents, would lead to a reasonably

factual presentation of the History for most purposes. There is a

great debate going on here at the moment, with one member who maintains

that he has a genuine 1918 Essex, which may or may not be, but his

endeavours to prove this are extremely difficult, as one cannot go on

things like hearsay, probabilities, likelihoods etc. John Conde at

one stage had lots of facts and figures. Is he still around? Perhaps

the H.E.T. Historical Soc. may be eventually able to collect all the

official documents extant together so that there is a difinitive source

of information. Otherwise we are destined to suffer peoples opinions

as to what may have occurred.
