Head Bolts

I have had my 53 Hornet for a little over a year. Last week while replacing the head gasket I discovered that the bolts were 1/2" and not 7/16". Is this common? Has the block been modified for 1/2" bolts? I do know that a previous owner rebuilt the engine at some point.
