I have seen one engine modified with a flexible pipe from the top of the

crankcase breather to the carb air intake, but the engine was in very poor

condition. The down-side of this arrangement would be a heavy coating of

sludge on the inside of the intake chamber and intake valves. I don't see

any reason to change the '29 set-up, as air going past the top of the

breather tube will effectively purge the crankcase. Possibly modify with a

curved pipe down to bottom of sump level like the Terraplane and later

set-up would minimise fumes inside the engine compartment, but I have never

found it a problem. Theoretically such a breather from the top tappet cover

would help oil mist circulate up to that area, but would it in fact

lubricate anything, or just disappear out the breather? Earlier models

could possibly benefit from a side tappet breather if crankcase pressure

became a problem, but I doubt if it is necessary.
