Re: [HSS] 1924 Sunbeam Boatail

Paul,

The Sunbeam has only 500 miles on it since the rebuild so I haven't pushed it

hard yet. However, it's cruising happily at 55mph and my expectation is that it

should have a top speed of around 75-80mph. These were not usually bodied as

sports cars but mine is based on a custom-built car delivered on the same

chassis, etc., in 1924. Brakes are mechanical (rods to rear, cables to front)

and very good. Handling seems OK but there's a bit of sorting to be done yet.

With a 130.5" wheelbase and cantilever rear springs it's never going to compete

with a genuine sports chassis. Engine capacity is 3.2 litres (Hudson S6 is 4.7

litres) so the 4-speed 'box is very necessary. My '28 Hudson has a smoother

engine but far inferior handling, although to be fair I haven't tried to correct

the understeer. Very different cars for very different markets!

Work starts soon on my S6 racer. Spent Sunday morning at an historic race

meeting (eligibility is 1920's through to 1970) and got the juices flowing. It

sounds as though wire wheels are difficult to obtain in the US - is this right?

Does anyone have pictures of the early racers (probably not the factory cars)

that had either a stubby tail (a la the Bothwell car on our web page) or no tail

at all - just a fuel tank and one or two spares? One such apparently raced in

Argentina and I've seen occasional photos of others like this.

Cheers,

Peter R.

Just in case you haven't seen the pictures that Peter posted of his 1924

Sunbeam Boatailed Roadster, you may check them out at:

That car looks like a lot of fun. How does this car compare to a Super

Six in the driving?

We could do something like that with Super Six bits, maybe with cycle

fenders as these should be easier to source than the very special ones on the

Sunbeam. How about a large diameter welded up header and exhaust pipe running

outside the body on the right side? Boy, we're still stuck on the wheels,

however.
