Generator Cut Out
Patient: 1928 Hudson with 1929 Engine and Autolite CAB (could be GAB)
3-brush Generator that has been rewound to output 12 Volts.
Symptom: Cutout relay (no part number visible) has open-
circuited "voltage coil" (the fine wire coil wound under the "current
coil". Therefore, it does not pull in even though the generator is
putting out proper voltage. I have measured the voltage coil with an
Ohmmeter and it IS open circuited.
What I suspect: Since the cutout always seemed to run hot, I suspect
that it is just a 6 Volt device that has simply been adjusted to pull
in at a higher voltage (maybe a stronger spring) and, due to the
extra current through the voltage coil, finally either burned the
coil out or melted the solder at one end or the other.
What I want: Does anybody know of someone who repairs (rewinds the
coil and adjusts the cutout for the proper operating voltage) these
parts, or does anyone have, or know someone who has, rebuilt or
exchange cutouts for 12 volts that will fit the application? I think
that the main issue would be the screw holes to fit on the generator.
Thanks,
Tom Goodman
