Paul, my '28 Essex has leaked a small amount of oil out the side of the

cylinder head gasket for the last 15 years, and there is no sign of

water in the oil, so I guess I have been lucky that things have not got

worse. Probably an imperfection in the block or head, or even the

gasket. There were no washers installed under the head nuts

originally. Torque the nuts down to 60-65 lbs and see if they move,

you've got nothing to lose.
