Super Six Gearlever Butler Finish
Geoff writes that the gear lever was originally finished in nickel and
asks:
<< What do you mean ""butler"" finish? >>
Butler Finish is a type of nickel plating that had a matt appearance. It
was very, very common on upscale sedans in the twenties, even the upscale
Model As used it. My '29 Super Six Town Sedan should have it but it was
redone in chrome by somebody in the past. Many of the Super Six sales
brochures mention that the interior trim in done in butler finish but neglect
to call out which pieces were bright nickel and which were butler finish
nickel. The gear lever being such a large and visible piece is important to
get right. Any opinions?

the pin and screw cap. Take this out and the ball cap just unscrews by
hand usually. >>
This turned out to be very easy. The cap did unscrew by hand on the parts
car lever kept in outdoor storage. There was another pin through the
gearlever tower on the '26 parts car. It was retained by a snap pin on each
side, There was also a square spacer part in the vertical cut out on the ball
part of the lever. It was pierced and retained by the pin. Any idea what this
does?
I believe that the coupe should be just as easy when I get to it
hopefully in two days time. I painted the parts car lever black intending to
use it on the Coupe while that lever is at the platers.

seal cover from the rear or slide the joint off the shaft unless you
first of all not the position of the arrows on the shaft and spline,
otherwise you will get hem back in the wrong position, which leads to
vibration and wear. The covers are held on by round head cap screws.
Watch out for the key that the shaft goes through. This is all
described in the '26 workshop manual. It's pretty simple really, once
you have done it! >>
I have that manual and will give it a look this evening, thanks for the
reminder!
