Single/Multi plate Clutch Differences

My '26 Super Six Coupe came with a '29 F-Head motor when I bought it. I

did not know until this week what clutch was in it. By the simple process of

disassembly, the clutch proved to be a '29 single plate unit that was missing

a dozen corks and worn down to metal in a couple of areas. Now the car is to

receive it's proper sidevalve engine, maybe it should also have the old

multiplate clutch.

What are the differences between the single and multiplate clutch

installations? I know that the flywheels and clutch assembly are different,

but how about the transmission, throwout and clutch cover bearings? Can I

convert the assembly back by just using the older flywheel and multiplate

clutch "pack?"

Does anybody know why Hudson made the change? Was there a problem with

the old clutch, or was it just more expensive to make?
