Steering Hubs/Smith On Clutches

clutch, they are a much simpler and more rugged unit than the older
multi-plate one, and give very little trouble. If I were you i would
try soaking the NOS unit in kerosene and oil for a week and see if the
corks rejuvenate, otherwise get it recorked. Doug Wildrick can do
these, or I can do them as well, but you would have to pay extra postage
over here. Check Doug's price, and if you consider him too expensive
then contact me and I'll provide an exchange disc for you for U.S.$70
plus postage. >>
I'll get a check headed your way for three of the steering wheel hubs,
thank you!
New Year's Eve I telephoned Jack Smith in Manitoba and he cleared much of
the mystery about the clutches. To sum up a long conversation, he said that
the early multiplate clutches did not work as well as the later single plate
ones, and that he would stick with it as no one would ever be able to tell it
was wrong for the year without taking things apart. He further explained that
the multiplate units were a pain to set up, that they were keyed and pinned
to the transmission input shaft and that made for a good deal of trouble
trying to get everything lined up under the car.
Given that information, your collaborating opinion and the simple fact
that I have all the proper bits in working condition ready to go back
together, I will stick with the '29 clutch for the time being!
Assuming airmail to be in the $30 to $50 U.S. range, please DO ship me a
recorked '29 disc Airmail ASAP. I hope to drive down to pick up the NOS one
from Pete Saturday and I will get it soaking (ATF OK?) post haste. I would
guess that after a week's soaking/airmail, I should have two to choose from,
and should the NOS one prove satisfactory, yours can be used on the '29 Town
Sedan which now has a terrible judder. My friend Dave's mother will be headed
back to NZ in 3 days and I can have her ship my worn disc to you locally from
NZ or I'll ship it slow boat from here.
Please let me know if these arrangements are OK with you.
