External Contracting Brake Lining

With the new motor/clutch project proceeding currently, it is time to

look down the road just a little bit. The brakes on the '26 are in poor

shape. When applied, they pull unevenly, shudder and fade after very little

use. The brakes on the car may have the original linings that Hudson

installed in November of 1926.

What lining should be used, and where can it be found? I have heard that

at least some of the current linings are too hard and don't work well. Others

say "asbestos" linings are best. What do you fellows use on your mid twenties

cars?

Is there an axle seal that should be replaced at the same time to keep

the new linings safe and dry?

I have an original 1929 Motor's Manual that lists the following specs for

the linings:

Manufacterer - Raybestos

Length - 44 1/2"

Width - 2 1/2"

Thickness - 3/16"? (Type too small to print clearly)

Clearance - 1/32"? (Type too small to print clearly)

Can anyone verify these dimensions?
