Super Six Crankcases Painted?

I am not sure about the 29. I know the block and head were dark green.

Were the 26 blocks also green? >>

John has asked a question that I thought I had a pretty firm answer to

until just last week. It seems pretty certain that the iron bits of the Super

Six motors were painted black until the last few years when they were painted

green. I have heard a few stories claiming that the switch might have taken

place in '26, others that it was sometime in '27 or '28. Do we all agree that

'29s were all painted green?

In the discussion of color, I had always assumed that we were talking

about only the iron bits, not the crankcase. Just lately however, I have

heard several people say that they believe that the Super Six crankcase

should be painted black as well!

Taking a quick scan of my owners manual collection, it seems that the

illustrations mostly show a light colored crankcase. Most, but not all! There

are some pictures showing a dark crankcase. I have always believed that

painted crankcases were done by somebody to spruce up an old dirty looking

old motor, maybe on the "Cheerful Charlies Cheapies" used car lot.

What do you think guys, could HUDSON have painted all of that magnificent

AL?
