I Hate when That Happens . . .

Off and on so the last several weekends I have been dolling up the motor

that is to go into my '26 Hudson. It has been overhauled by Jack Smith and

sounds very nice when it runs. Many of the exterior fittings had been blasted

and installed - with no plating or paint and most of them were already rusty

- BEFORE the motor was even installed in the car, not a situation I was able

to let stand.

One of the items that needed attention was the coil mounting bracket and

hardware. This bracket is held down by two of the front head nuts, the only

ones with the beautiful bell shape and unlike any other acorn nuts I have

ever seen. On reinstalling the bracket I decided to fit a very thin 1/2" AN

stainless washer that would with lubricated threads, give a nice torque

reading. As the wrench went through 50 lbs on the far side nut, I got that

sickening feeling that all was NOT well! The pointer peaked at 50 then

descended through 40. Yikes!

Both the nut and stud are buggered and will have to be replaced. I found

another nut in the spare parts stash so the one irreplaceable part has been

located. What about the studs? They are 3 3/4 1/2-16 studs. All of the studs

on the mid twenties Super Six motors are too short for my comfort, many not

even coming to the top of the head nuts, so I am thinking of pulling all 25

out and fitting 4" thoughout. The extra length ought to allow ALL of the

threads on the nut to catch some stud so that stripping threads should be a

worry of the past. Perhaps 4 1/4" ones ought to be fitted where that bracket

is to allow for it's extra thickness.

Has anybody got a good source on studs? I did a net search and found lots

of stuff I couldn't use.
