The Switch Is Apart
Attachments :
Thanks to a suggestion on this list, I tried prying the rotary switches
from the handles of the by now infamous "Mien Car" electrical switch. A
little pressure produced a wiggle, enough to confirm that the barrels would
separate at the base.
The parts were spritzed with Aerokroil and the circular bits were prized
off. The handles were swollen and slightly stuck into the face of the switch,
so they were tapped out with a drift. This needed enough force to give me
qualms about the probability of the deteriorated pot metal being damaged, but
this turn out not to be the case. Removing the rotary portion allowed a
larger punch to be used than would have been the case had they remained in
place.
The two handles look to be identical, a bit of a break. Now they are off,
it is easy to see the deep crack that had weakened the metal. If my head
hadn't broken the handle a couple of weeks ago, my hand certainly would have
on using the switch sometime in the future.
A pic is attached showing the parts laid out. More detailed shots have
been posted to the Files section.
