Great Race

Well I'm back and we survived !  The Race was
a tough one with lots of mountains to pull and a day and a half of desert.
We had a one day DNF ( Did Not Finish ) due to the distributor drive bronze
part, the one that shifts or slides as the water pump sprocket is tightened. I
knew that this was a weak link and had carried a steel replacement for
two years on the race, but left it on the bench this year.

I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND CARRYING A SPARE OR A
STEEL COPY IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUT THE ENGINE UNDER HEAVY LOAD FOR A LONG
PERIOD. Fortunately a friend and fellow Hudson Super Six owner on the race had
one. All other failures were non-Super Six related.  Tires and tubes are
very important, I had installed new COKER tires and tubes at the start of the
Race, on one wheel the tube stem hole was not large enough for the stem, so
the tube did not sit flat on the rim and boot and therefore wore and
went flat (at 55 mph). The other failures were with the retro water pump
and oil pump.

Randy Svajda our navigator, is an experienced
professional mechanic and kept us running, but required several late night
sessions.

Paul if you will tell me how to access the
YaHoo pictures I will post some pictures I have of the race. I would also
be glad to post dimensions of the steel drive part on here if there is an
interest.

This is the 4th Great Race for the Hudson and
has finished all of them, 1988, 1997,1998,2001, also Texas Great race
1996,1997,1998, 2000, 2001.

I really enjoyed the visit in Pasadena with
the Super Six crew that came out.

Thanks for your interest. Bob Harris  ' 28'
