Re: [HSS] Re: "Clincher" Rims
Just to elaborate on what Zeke said, clinchers are not what you want.
Clincher rims were the first alternative to the wire on style used by the
horseless cariages dating back to the turn of the last century. Early
motorcars, perhaps even the first few years of Super Sixes, all came with
them. These were the ones that did not come off the wheel because they were
permanantly part of the wheel. The poor driver had to wrestle the tires on
and off the rim while the rim was still mounted to the car. A lot of fun that
was!
In the late teens, a new type of wheel was very rapidly adopted right
across the motoring trade. This new wheel had a removable bolt on
"demountable" rim that was quick and easy to remove from the fellow. For the
first time, the spare tire could be carried already mounted on the rim, aired
up ready to bolt on when required. By 1920, virtually all cars (even Fords)
came with these new demountable rims.
Your '28 had the demountable type of rims, very tough to find now. Geoff
Clark had a lead on a guy that was looking into making a batch of these '28
rims, but I haven't heard any news of this project recently.
