New Handles Cast Up

Attachments :
Some weeks ago as I was assembling bits on the '26 Hudson project, I

broke one of the electric switch handles on the instrument panel with my

head. Inevitable smart aleck comments aside, I had really done it this time

as this car was the only one I had ever seen that had both handles intact and

replacements for these die cast gems were just a pipe dream.

Thanks to a tip from Dave Kostansek I arranged to send them off to:

About 8 weeks after I shipped the originals to them, the new ones

arrived. The price came to a bit less than $100. The new parts were cast in

stainless and polished rather than being nickel plated. The detail was not

too bad, not what I had hoped to see, but far better than I had feared. Some

detail had been polished out by poor buffing, but overall the new handles are

    acceptable.

The #8 screw holes needed to be bored and threaded and a local machine

shop did the job for $30. the pair. An hour or so with jeweler's files

tailored the casting to the switch parts and the switch went together without

    trauma.

It is now wired in the car and functions as it should. The handles DO

look a little different from the originals to my eyes, but as the saying

goes, a blind man riding by on a horse couldn't tell the difference!

A pic is attached to this post and another one will follow in a separate

email. A final pic showing the finished installation will follow in a day or

so when I have time to download it from the camera.
