Lester Tires
I have Lesters on the '26 Coupe and they seem to be a quality tire. The
tires were on the car when I bought it in '95 and were far from new then. The
rubber is still reasonably mobile. With the modest driving I have done so
far, the Lesters have been fine. They have a classic look to them that
compliments classic era cars rather nicely.
The "rap" on the Lesters is that they follow the pavement seems and ruts
due to the longitudinal tread pattern. I have yet to put enough miles (nor
are the kingpins in good enough shape) on the '26 to say much about this.
I did have a set on the '39 Caddie when I bought it and GAVE them away.
They DID follow ruts severely and worse, they provided very little traction.
It was easy to skid the tires under braking and crossing railroad tracks
under even modest power resulted in little burnouts. I crossed a set of wet
tracks one time and laid ten feet of rubber under very easy throttle. Not
Good! I replaced them with Wide White Radials and the difference is like the
difference between driving on a sheet of ice vs. a dry Macadam road.
I bought a set of 6.50 X 19 Goodrich Silvertown blackwalls for the '29
and have been very pleased with them. They provide good traction with good
steering and look much like the Diamond tread Goodyears that Hudson put on in
the factory. When the time comes to get the '26 a new set of shoes, I will
look for another set of Silvertowns.
