Re: [HSS] Early Racers

Jeff/Gary,

In terms of physical progress my project is going to be stalled for a while,

but at least after next week I'll have it at home! The guys who've been

looking after it are the best, but my concern is that they're so far away -

over 1,000 miles - and if there's a problem (fire, accident, severe illness,

death or whatever) it can be extremely difficult to prove ownership and

recover the bits.

I bought this whole thing from a friend who decided that he'd have to live

to 300 to finish all his projects. There have been quite a few Hudson S6

specials and racers built in Oz - most resemble the 1916 factory racers

(long pointy tails) but there are also two supercharged F-head specials that

are styled like the 4.5 litre Bentleys that had so much competition success

in the '20s. One of these sold recently at Pebble Beach for US$136k, I

believe. Next week I'll be visiting the guy who did much of the work and is

building another for himself. This one is rather different in that it has

an all-timber body - framing, skin, the lot!

I've seen lots of spirited discussion within our group regarding the

engines, in particular, and the same goes on here. My engine hasn't been

touched yet and so I'm getting a lot of advice (especially from some of my

very good mates, most of whom have never seen a Super Six side-valve

engine). Having people like Gary and NZ Jeff around with their serious

hands-on experience is going to help me considerably!!

The gearbox has been rebuilt with 2nd having a ratio that is somewhat closer

to 3rd than the original. For competition you only need 2nd and 3rd and in

reality 2nd is only there for hillclimbs or very twisty circuits. We have

both of these plus some rather gentle circuits with big sweeping corners, so

hopefully the Hudson will be happy on all of them. One day.

Cheers...........Peter R.
