Optima Batteries
Attachments :
I have been using the Optima 6v gel cell batteries for the last six years
in various old cars. For the most part, I have been extremely happy with
them. They never need water, never leak or corrode, can be mounted in any
position, (even upside down) and are lighter than the old lead-acid batteries.
The batteries are about half the size of the old fashioned kind and I
think that two might be ganged together for even more punch than the standard
"850 Cold Cranking Amps."
Until I win the lotto and can afford two of these $130 jobs per car, it
is necessary to taylor a single Optima to fit the old factory battery box
made for the standard batteries. On the '26 Coupe, a battery holder was made
up out of bits of 2x8 scrap and screwed together with wood screws using an
electric drill with a screw driver bit. The box cradles the Optima side to
side and raises it up where the cables can be easily mounted. The project
required about an hour's time including some head scratching and scrap pile
search time.
Attached is a pic of the resulting installation under the driver's seat
in typical Roaring 20s fashion.
