Motometer History?
Attachments :
I was looking over a recent Motometer ebay purchase last night and
started to wonder about the history of these once very common items. First of
all, were they all nickeled or solid brass?
On the restos and repops I have seen, the Motometers were always one or
the other. I assumed when looking at an original unrestored instrument that
the lack of plating on the central core must be due to the plating having
flaked off the pot metal. You know, dissimilar metals and all of that rot.
The body on the Motometer that came with my '26 Hudson was chipped black
paint over pot metal. Some previous owner must have dressed it up with the
cheap coat of paint. It is nickel now and looks good.
Last night, I noticed that there was not a chip of the original plating
left anywhere on the new purchase and that seemed odd. Surely SOME would be
left somewhere? Tony on the super Six List posted the attached picture
(thought to be from 1917) on the Super Six Lit list. It appears to show a
black body with nickeled trim rings. Could this be a factory finish?
Why the wide variety of these things? How long were they made? Has
anybody ever written a book or is there a website devoted to Motometer
history?
