There seems to be some confusion about the "original" race cars. The
factory team cars (with the long tails) were straight out racers, but my
meagre research shows that there were a stack of other cars that are
sometimes called racers. Ira Vail's original racer - the Tinsmith Special,
I think it was called - wasn't a factory car, but it seems to have provided
at least some of the inspiration for Hudson to get into track racing with
Super Sixes. But there were cars the factory built for speed records and
for Pike's Peak, neither of which is racing in the strictest sense. In
addition, a number of private individuals built their own racers.
So if oldhudsons@aol.com (sorry, I can't find the real name - Pete Booz,
maybe?) is referring to the factory racers then I'm interested in the
information presented, because the only pics I have show dual exhaust pipes
and a pair of Hudson side-draft carburettors. But then, I also have a
picture captioned "Ira Vail driving Hudson Super Six in 1916 Vanderbilt Cup
race at Santa Monica, California". The car looks very like the factory cars
but it carries a side-mounted spare wheel and has a single exhaust pipe. It
also has a single hood strap whereas the team cars had two. The team cars
didn't appear until May 1917, but who knows what other cars the factory may
have supported prior to that? If the photo caption is accurate then maybe
Vail's car was his own.
Competition cars always undergo continual modification in the quest for
better performance, so it's almost impossible to say that any given
configuration is "original", especially when there's a team involved. I
know this drives historians nuts but at least it gives people like me a bit
of flexibility - I can't hope to re-create one of the team cars, but at
least I can build a car that approximates what was generally being done in a
particular era. It also means that because I don't claim it to be a
particular car with a known history I don't get into authenticity arguments
with the people who control historic racing here in Australia. But who
would want to argue over this load of bones? At least the 25" wheels look
OK. See attached pix.
On the other hand, I would probably sacrifice certain important body parts
to get hold of an original! My screensaver is a picture of one, dark blue
and fully restored.
Cheers............Peter R.
