Re: [HSS] Side draft carburetor
Zeke; That O-ring you received was from me. Gary Kuck
The O-ring I gave you was teflon, the buna-n or other types seem to
distort and
get hard. I have, however had some difficulty with the O-rings
consistently sealing
and I believe I'm going back to conventional packing. The stuff to use
is the
black nasty Water pump packing, usually it is multiple strands wrapped
together,
I think maybe 3 strands. Use one of the strands to pack the gland in the
main jet enrichment seal. I guarantee you that if these things leak, you
will
run like **** and will wash down the cylinder walls easily with gas. The
typical
symptoms are poor idle and richer than heck. It is a very good idea to
just tighten
up the existing packing first before replacing. This procedure is
relatively
painless and I can tell someone how to do this if anyone wants to know.
Actually the side draft carbs are fairly maint. free. Gary

Subject: [HSS] Side draft carburetor
When the Great Race stopped in Lexington KY this summer, I struck up
a conversation with someone who was with one of the
early "speedsters". I asked him what they did about the packing gland
in the side draft carburetor. The owners manual says to use soft
candle wicking. Not the best stuff. The person I talked to went back
to his tool box and fished out a white o-ring and gave it to me. He
said that would cure the problem. It did! If that person is on this
list;Thank you. That little ring solved all of my rough idling and
flooding problems. Before I replaced the packing, the car would only
idle at a high rpm. Now it idles smooth at any rpm. Anyone with a
sidedrafter should check that packing gland ocasionally. To those of
you with updrafts, well... Zeke
