Rear axle oil seals.

To save members the hassle of measuring, I have just installed modern

oil seals in the rear axle of my '29 Hudson. The inner seal (right

inside the housing next to the diff gears, is CR13569. To fit this you

will have to pack around the outside of the seal, and this is easier of

course if you have the gearset out. I used a soup tin with corrugated

sides (circumferentially). Cut out a section of the corrugated part

and wrap around the seal to get a fit, then insert this packing in the

housing, and using a little gasket compound or loctite, etc, as a seal

around the outside, press the seal into this. For the inner seal of

the axle outer ends, use CR17484. The original seal retainers were

held in place by punching the housing with a dot punch, and where the

housing is distorted you will have to grind out with a small rotary

grinder to get these burrs out, and grind a slight chamfer in the

housing. The 17484 seal is a perfect tight fit in the housing. Hope

this is of help.
