The Coupe Is Out!

This past Saturday was the final day that was available to get the '26

Hudson Coupe ready for the Laughlin Economy Run. As Geoff and Randy had

suggested, the mixture adjustment turned out to be very easy to do. The big

knurled knob readily turned with a screwdriver and at either end of 5 or so

turns made the engine run rougher and slower. I left it somewhere in between.

The motor does run better.

Sad to say, there is a persistent miss that was unaffected by the mixture

changes. The motor misses, runs rough and "hunts" at idle. I shorted the

plugs one after the other with a screwdriver, all had a good fat spark. I

don't think it misses except at idle, Jeff, you rode in the rumble seat at

San Simeon, how did it sound? Anybody have any ideas on what to check next?

The miss is annoying, but the fatal problem for the Economy Run was the

fan hub bearing. The last several drives I have been hearing a squealing

sound from the motor. It was only evident at speeds over 30mph. The faster

the car goes, the louder the noise. Saturday I revved the motor fast enough

at a standstill to confirm that the noise was coming from the fan hub

bearing. It seemed a simple matter to grease the hub and silence the bearing,

but the noise is still there after two good sessions from the grease gun.

Something is dry up there and I fear that the hub may seize or ever come

off at speed. It looks like the radiator will have to come off to get at the

hub and there is just not enough time left to do this before the trip. Any

suggestions on getting this hub shipshape?

Well, you other competitors caught a big break with the old Super Six out

of the running this year (it was sure to take first place for the most gas

used), but like the Cubies fans say, "just wait till next year!"
