There are several viruses out there at present that behave the way you
describe - one of them got me last week!
You're right - don't open attachments unless you're absolutely sure that the
mail came from a trusted source.
Best bet is to sign up for an anti-virus product such as Nortons, Dr.
Solomon, McAfee, etc., etc. That way you can at least keep up with the game
and ususally deal with the nasties pretty soon after they arrive. The other
smart move is to make sure you back up your files from time to time.
But don't ask me any tech. questions about this - I'm just a non-tech. type
that uses computers a lot.
