25 steering box followup!
Well Guys, I'm happy to report success with the bound up steering box.
Once out of the car and opened up, it proved to be a relatively easy
situation. With the sector shaft out, I was able to press the worm
shaft with bearings and the offending "bushing" out. My theory
proved correct that there is a die-cast, white metal "thrust bushing"
which had swolen to bind to the housing as well as the shaft. Once
the assembly was out of the box, a gear puller got the bushing off
the shaft intact. Then a simple matter of the lathe to reduce the OD
and expand the ID for a nice fit. Reassembled it feels like new!
