engine back together, but need clutch help

Thanks to the feedback and advice received here, I was successful in

sorting out the engine problems on the 1929 Standard Sedan I bought

at auction last month. It seems to be running nicely, and now that

it is registered and insured (Hagerty worked out great for that!) I

was finally able to take it for a spin.

Unfortunately, I ground the gears on every shift, including going

into low or reverse with the car at idle. According to a sticker on

the door jam, the clutch was replaced in June 2001 about 600 miles

ago. The car sat undriven for at least Feb-Aug 2002, possibly since

fall, 2001.

I checked for a stuck clutch by putting it in gear and cranking the

starter, and the car wanted to move forward. I searched the existing

messages and got advice about towing it (in gear, clutch pedal down),

which seemed to immediately free it. Now, with the engine running, I

can have it in gear with the clutch pedal down, and the car stays at

rest. Still can't shift without grinding.

I drained the fluid and replaced it with 1 and 1/2 cups of

oil/kerosene mix. Still no improvement.

I think I correctly checked the measurement of "free movement" that

is mentioned in the handbook/manual, which I interpret to be done

under the floor board - it is approximately 3/4" from the bottom of

the board to the pedal arm when it is not depressed. I am confused

if that's the correct way to measure it or not.

The pedal does go clear to the floor board when you push down, so I'm

thinking I may need to lengthen the linkage. I am also wondering if

the throw-out bearing could be worn out, but I'd like to think the

prior owner (now deceased) would have replaced it if need be when he

replaced the clutch. I'm also thinking that maybe the surface of the

flywheel is not clean, or the new oil not yet where it needs to be,

and driving it a while (intentionally slipping the clutch some?)

might cure things.

Can anyone offer some suggestions on what to try? Thanks.
