shold have a gasket under it. The theory is that any greae or oil is
flung out into this recess and then out the little recesses in between
the spokes. Trouble is these are usually choked up with a mix of
grease and dust which has set like concrete, and by the time you find
the seal is leaking, your brake linings are well and truly saturated!
They had a much better system on the '29's where there was a large hole
in the backing plate for any excess grease and oil to come out, and this
is easily checked for dampness visually.
