Town Sedan Up and Running!!!!!!
After a long, long period of waiting caused by a number of factors, not
the least of which was my triple-fusion neck surgery in July, our '29
Hudson Town Sedan is once again up and running.
We found a marvelous old-car mechanic in Arcadia, CA, about 10 miles
east of our home in Pasadena. Stu Kreiger, with Gary Hill Auto in
Arcadia, fixed a number of problems on the Hudson, including:
1. Wouldn't start. "Old cars are not that complicated to get started,"
Stu said. "All you need is gas and a spark." We had neither. He
replaced the existing electric gas pump with a new one. And he fixed a
horrible timing problem as well as other ignition-related intermittent
problems. And fixed the carburetor (I build a new float out of balsa
wood, cut to shape and coated with epoxy glue thinned a bit with
alcohol. This is supposed to be impervious to gasoline.) He also fixed
a problem with the choke.
2. Oil leaking at fitting to oil pump. Replaced fitting.
3. Wheel bearing wasn't bearing. He rebuilt the packing on the left
front wheel.
4. Brakes needed adjustment so they wouldn't bind after new brake shoes
were installed. He took care of that.
5. Exhaust was leaking at many points. He welded things together to
the exhaust is tight.
6. Head gasket leaking. He retorqued to spec.
7. Fan bearing was so worn that fan was just flopping around. He bored
out the existing bearing, installed two ball bearing sets (generator
bearings) and a new shaft to fit the interior of the ball bearing set.
(If anyone else needs this job done, I can get a price for you. I think
it will be about $200 to $250, and all you'd have to do is ship him the
fan mount.
One immediate challenge that remains is that the steering has lots of
play. Are there adjustments that can be made to the steering box to fix
that?
