26 Coupe Out Of Storage
Attachments :
This weekend I got the '26 Coupe out of storage for the first time in 15
months. The car sat undriven for all of that time except for one brief run
around the cell block late last summer. As you may know, I lost the lease on
my garage and the Hudsons have been in storage pending other arrangements.
Three interesting points:
1. The gel cell "Optima" 6v battery kicked the big Super Six motor well
enough to start it easily. The battery has received no charge at all (except
for that brief run last summer) in 15 months and has been called upon to turn
the motor over a few times while in storage.
2. The vacuum tank needed no priming. I just turned the fuel valve at the
bottom and proceeded to fire up the motor as if it had just been put up last
night! I have heard for years that these tanks go dry in as little as two
weeks.
3. The nickel plating was a concern as it is said to dull quickly and
once gone can be impossible to get back into shape. The plating did have a
soft cloudy appearance with a whitish haze that did not look promising.
Fortunately, a soft towel removed the white coating and a little elbow
grease and Meguire's Cleaner Wax brought back the depth of the plating. If
you are concerned about restoring the original nickel to your car, don't be.
It's not that big a deal.
I have attached two pics, one showing the radiator shell with a small
spot rubbed with a towel. The second picture shows the Motometer polished up
with the Meguire's wax.
Now we just need to find a plater that can do the good quality Watts
nickel plating.
