Generators

For Lew's benefit, and anyone else interested, to check whether a

two-brush generator is in working order or not, short the field terminal

to ground, and connect the armature terminal to a the negative terminal

of a 6 volt battery, and the the positive to the body of the generator,

and the generator should spin slowly. If you have an ammeter, connect

this in, and it should be around 4.5 amps. If it utrns smoothly, and

does not sound grindy or rough, then you have a good generator, and if

the brushes appear unworn, just oil the front and rear bearings and you

should be in business. Remember, you will have to have positive ground

for these auto-lite generators and regulators, or you will burn out the

regulator points. All you have to do is reverse the battery and ammeter

connections. Contrary to popular belief, the starter will not turn

backwards.
