29 Hudson/Essex Sales

<< The last statement is a common misconception, printed so many

times that it's accepted as fact. That's because the published figures,

even in 1930, combined 1929 Hudson and Essex (and Dover)

production. If you add up the four Chrysler Corporation marques

(375,094) you get considerably more than Hudson Motor Car

Company's 300,962.

However, what is not commonly appreciated is that Essex was the

third-best-selling make in 1929, right behind Ford and Chevy. Conde

(The Cars That Hudson Built) breaks out Essex shipments for 1929

as 227,653, which edged out Whippet, 1928's third-place car. >>

Thanks Kit, that is a correction worth making and I can see where the

confusion arises. Sadly, Hudson sales seem to have paled in comparison with Essex

sales. I know both my parents came from families that had an Essex, but

neither remembers a Hudson. Does it seem there are now more Hudson than Essex from

the twenties at meets? Were the Essex cars considered less worthy of

restoration, or perhaps junked sooner?

I have often wondered at the wonderful number of Model A Fords that can

still be seen on any weekend. Ford made 5 Million of them, and it seems most of

them are still running. What happened to the Chevies? Chevy outsold Ford in

at least half of the Model A years, but they do not appear to have survived in

any numbers. There has been speculation that the Fords combined mechanical

robustness with all steel bodies while the Chevies were weaker mechanically and

had short lived composite bodies, both of which lead to early retirement. Just

speculation folks!
