Gasket Sealers
Your mechanic was probably thinking of the bad ole Permatex tar sealer days. I always use a gasket sealer, usually one of the easily removed silicon types. They cost nothing in extra labor on teardown, and often do aid in a tidy joint. The old days of laboriously scraping off Permatex No 2 inch by inch are long gone, thankfully!
The modern sealers are so good now that when I did my Norton Commando a few years ago I was able to build a leak free bike, at least while it was running. That is more than just sealer of course, but it shows something of the value of these wonderful products.
