Re: [HSS] Exhaust nut & Heat Tube

Rick, if you can bring yourself to convert to a non-original set-up, it is

far more efficient and safe, from a gas-tight point of view, to weld a

two-bolt flange on the back of the by-pass housing, and correspondingly on

the exhaust pipe. This can be done either with MIG or arc-weld using nickle

iron electrode. Then you can just bolt it in place with a gasket.

Otherwise you will have to get a new flange ring machined, which will be an

expensive exercise. The original by-pass pipe rings had asbestos circles

specially made for this application, and the only way to seal them nowadays

is to use asbestos string (if you can find any), and pack well with exhaust

sealer paste. Or alternatively, as you don't now need any heat in this

area, with modern gasoline being as volatile as it is, block off each end

and just have the pipe in there as a dummy to look original. I'm just

giving you the easy way out, and of course if you want to keep absolutely

original, then that's your prerogative. Good luck,

Geoff.

Subject: [HSS] Exhaust nut & Heat Tube

Hi, I am replacing my cracked exhaust manifold on my 1929 Hudson

Sedan and my exhaust nut shatter while taking it off. I heated it up

red hot and allowed it to cool, then with a spanner wrench on the

nut, it broke into several pieces. It appears it is made of cast

iron. Does anybody have an extra? Is anybody making new ones?

Also, I am replacing the heat tube from the exhaust manifold to the

intake. What's up with the little thin collars to hold the pipe in

place? I had a new pipe made but the collars are a little loose on

the pipe and it will leak exhaust gas out. Does anybody know how

this was to originally seal?

Thanks for your help!

Rick Mann
