Ignition switch replacement did the job
I'm happy to report that the transplant surgery on my ignition switch
was successful. In fact, it cured not one problem but three.
As I reported earlier, the switch was running very hot....obviously a
sign of resistance within the switch. After I pulled the Electrolock,
I measured the resistance within the switch, and it came out to almost
1.2 ohms. This doesn't seem like much, until you consider that the
voltage drop across 1.2 ohms will very considerably reduce the voltage
to the ignition coil, and thus to the spark plugs. No wonder, then,
that the engine was running very weakly and roughly, and starting hard!
The poor thing was starved for a decent spark. The new switch fixed
that.
This repair also fixed a problem with very dim output on the cowl
lights. Same problem: low voltage to the bulbs, since so much of the
available voltage was eaten up by the internal resistance within the
switch.
I"ll post a web page and photos shortly with the switch installation I
performed.
Thanks again to all who offered counsel. It helped.
Last question: does anyone know how to get ahold of the guy who
rebuilds Electrolock switches? Someday, I would like to restore the
igniton to OEM condition.
